Chapter 39

But as awkward as it was, this was something she really had to learn—though she still wasn’t sure if her situation would even involve it.

“Baby, when are you getting that? Want to put one on now just to be safe?” Wang Haiyan finished demonstrating and impatiently walked over, reaching for Su Yun’s pants.

“No no no!” Su Yun was so startled her body went limp, flattening herself against the wall.

I still couldn’t take it. Please, just stop talking about it.

Afterward, all the way till nightfall, her mother cleaned the entire room for her, and they chatted for a long time.

One thing they asked about was why Su Yun’s hair was white, and she answered honestly.

This time her parents weren’t as shocked as before—they accepted it after a few comments, and it made them realize they had to help their daughter keep this secret. No hospitals.

As for her ID card, her dad said he’d ask the elders back in their hometown through his phone. Once he figured out a way, he’d call Su Yun back to take care of it.

Sure enough, no matter what Su Yun became, or what grades she got on exams, in her parents’ eyes she’d always be their precious child.

……

……

After her parents left, Su Yun sat alone in her room, gloomily staring at the pile of things now cluttering the corner.

I really have become a girl now, huh...

Su Yun gave a bitter smile.

When she made that wish, she never thought the consequences would be this serious—she’d just wanted to become a girl so she could be with herself.

Still, she believed her dad would figure something out.

After all, when she was little and got sick—so sick she’d burned up past forty degrees and passed out—it was her dad who carried her around non-stop to get help, and in the end saved her.

Back then, his back was still fine.

After a while, Su Yun came out of her memories. She looked around at the now oddly empty-feeling room, unsure what to do next.

“Hmm... I have to sing for Qin Xue tomorrow afternoon. I guess I’ll practice some more.” Su Yun picked up the phone lying on the bed.

On the screen, Qin Xue had sent her a message.

Just as Su Yun was about to click into it, she noticed a message in one of her group chats beneath it.

(Zhang Deyi is in the hospital)

“?!” Su Yun froze when she saw it, completely forgetting about Qin Xue’s message, and immediately clicked into the group chat.

This group chat wasn’t just any group—it was her old dorm chat. So it definitely wasn’t a joke.

Sure enough, the moment she entered, the whole chat was in chaos, people frantically @-ing others, telling those out playing basketball to hurry to the hospital to see Zhang Deyi.

The last message was sent at 7:30 PM. Now it was already 9 PM.

Su Yun figured the whole dorm must already be at Zhang Deyi’s side, which was why no one had said anything more.

She immediately messaged Liu Fei to ask what was going on.

A bad guess was already forming in her mind—and if it was true, she’d be blaming herself for a long time.

(No idea. Around six, a bunch of guys suddenly stormed the dorm. As soon as they saw Zhang Deyi, they started beating him. I tried to stop them and got slapped a few times too.)

(Like ten guys. Two of our dorm mates weren’t even around, we had no way of stopping them...)

(Those guys are such *#s, seriously, what the #@, total #&...)

Liu Fei first explained the general situation, then transformed into a full-on rage machine, spewing curse after curse at the attackers.

Su Yun’s face darkened as she looked at the photo Liu Fei sent.

In the picture, Zhang Deyi’s head had been stitched up in several places, and his body was wrapped in bandages after getting over ten stitches. He looked barely human.

A fire of rage rose up in Su Yun’s chest. She wanted to go beat every one of those guys to a pulp. But at the same time, she felt a heavy guilt.

Ten guys suddenly stormed the dorm and attacked Zhang Deyi—it didn’t take a genius to figure out why.

It had to be those out-of-school thugs who’d been driven off earlier but came back with reinforcements for revenge.

Su Yun could be selfish, but that didn’t mean she was selfish toward the people who were good to her. Zhang Deyi got hurt because of her, so now she had to find a way to make things right.

If only Zhang Deyi had brought a few more people back then, those punks wouldn’t have stood a chance against a bunch of hot-blooded college guys. But those scumbags had no sense of honor—they went for a sneak attack.

Su Yun had wanted to keep a low profile back then. Seeing Zhang Deyi handle them so easily, she hadn’t thought much of it. But now it had ended in disaster.

She clenched her jaw, overcome with guilt.

“If I ever run into you bastards... I’ll break every single one of you.”

Seeing that it was already past nine, she knew she could only go visit Zhang Deyi around noon tomorrow.

Ding... Just then, her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen—Qin Xue was calling with a voice chat.

“Baby, good evening~” As soon as the call connected, Qin Xue’s sweet, teasing voice came through.

Hearing the word baby, Su Yun fell silent.

“Baby, baby~ Why so quiet? Are you shy?”

Qin Xue, unaware of what had just happened, was still joking around like usual.

“Stop it. Don’t call me baby!”

In the next second, Su Yun shouted sharply, cutting Qin Xue off mid-sentence.

“...” Silence on the other end.

By the time Su Yun snapped out of her anger, she realized she’d messed up.

“I’m sor—”

“If you really don’t like being called that, I won’t say it anymore. I’m sorry—I didn’t realize.” But before Su Yun could apologize, Qin Xue spoke first.

Her tone was serious and sincere. She was genuinely taking responsibility.

That stunned Su Yun.

She remembered watching videos online, and they always said girls almost never admitted fault. Even when they were clearly wrong, the guy was supposed to coax them.

And yet Qin Xue—someone spoiled and pampered since birth—just apologized like that.

“No, no, it’s not your fault. I was just really mad about something that happened. It had nothing to do with you...”

“Oh~? What happened?” Qin Xue’s voice lightened up again.

“Just argued a bit with my parents. Nothing big. It’s fine now.” Su Yun didn’t tell her the truth.

“Ohh, I see.”

“Sister Xiaoyun is so gentle. If you got angry, it must’ve been your parents’ fault, huh?”

“Maybe...”

After that little incident, they went right back to chatting like the day before.

Only this time, they started at 9 PM.

They talked all the way until around 11, when Qin Xue had to go shower and hung up.

And the whole time, Qin Xue never called her baby again—just Sister Xiaoyun.

“Girls really are chatterboxes, huh. Once they start, they don’t stop.” Su Yun lay on her pillow. During the voice call, she’d rolled around so much she’d lost count.

“Whatever. I’ll shower and go to bed.”

She rolled off the bed.

……

……

“Big sis, you were talking forever!” At the bathroom door, Qin Yuanyuan puffed out her cheeks.

“Mm? What is it?” Qin Xue walked over holding her change of clothes, her face still carrying the smile from talking to her Sister Xiaoyun.

Even though she’d gotten a little scared at first, everything went smoothly afterward. Hearing that soft, sweet voice and teasing her felt inexplicably fun.

“I’ve been waiting here for a whole hour! All you do is chat with that person!” Qin Yuanyuan pouted harder when she saw her sister still smiling.

Big sis used to only chat with her...

In that moment, Qin Yuanyuan became even more certain of her suspicion.

“Didn’t I tell you to go shower first?”

“Wuu... I wanted to shower with you...”

“You’re such a baby. You’re too old for this, dummy.” Qin Xue flicked her sister’s forehead and pulled her into the bathroom.

Once inside, she started helping Qin Yuanyuan wash her hair.

But her mind was somewhere else entirely.

Qin Xue was looking forward to tomorrow—to hearing how beautiful Su Yun singing would be. After all, it had already sounded pretty good yesterday after just a little practice, even if she still went off-key now and then.

If all went well, she could let Su Yun take the center spot at the club’s performance during the sports festival the day after tomorrow. Hopefully, she wouldn’t lose too badly to that girl idol group.
