Chapter 40

“Ugh…”

Even though she had showered and gotten into bed at midnight, Su Yun kept tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep for a long time.

Who on earth wanted to hurt me?

She had no grudges with anyone, had only just turned into a girl a week ago, and didn’t even have an ID card yet.

Was it really just jealousy over my popularity?

But it wasn’t like Su Yun asked for any of this.

It was just that people thought she was pretty and voted for her, or left confessions, or made posts about her. Even the photos were taken and uploaded without her knowing—she had never once wanted to be famous.

If she could, Su Yun just wanted to go back to being invisible like before. No one noticed her, no one talked to her.

College was basically a miniature version of society, a prep course before stepping into the real world. And if even college was like this, she didn’t dare imagine how dark the real world must be.

She could only hope the police would catch those people and bring justice for Zhang Deyi.

“...”

Lying on her side, Su Yun gloomily stared out the window at the gray-black sky, deep in thought about life.

The moon was hidden behind thick, dark clouds, its light completely blocked.

After a while, Su Yun started to feel a chill around her. She tugged the blanket up closer.

Her body was cold, the blanket was cold, the whole room felt cold.

She curled into the covers, searching for a sliver of warmth.

“Mm…” The next second, she remembered how she had lost her temper with Qin Xue earlier.

Qin Xue probably wasn’t mad at me, right?

Actually, Su Yun didn’t really mind being called “baby.” As long as Qin Xue was happy… mm…

Thinking about Qin Xue’s sweet, teasing voice calling her “baby,” Su Yun clutched her blanket tightly, her heartbeat quickening.

Forget it, maybe I shouldn’t let her call her that again.

Before she knew it, the nervous thoughts were gone, and her mind wandered to strange little fantasies.

Hugging her blanket, she rolled around in bed until she finally drifted off to sleep from sheer mental exhaustion.

……

……

“I was too naïve to see, you’ve long belonged to someone else…”

A beautiful new week began with a beautiful melody.

At 7:00 AM, Su Yun crawled out of bed. Outside the window, the sky was bright and clear.

She felt like she had gotten decent rest and had plenty of energy.

Today’s schedule had the most classes of the whole week—packed in the morning and afternoon, seven hours total. It felt like being back in high school… like being in jail.

……

Not long after, Su Yun finished preparing her disguise. With a Bluetooth earbud in her right ear playing music, she rode the elevator downstairs.

“Huh?!”

When the elevator doors opened, someone was waiting outside.

Su Yun’s eyes widened, her mind instantly snapping into alert.

At first she was shocked, but then a wave of joy washed over her.

That girl from yesterday—she was still alive.

“Xiaorou, maybe we should go back,” said a young man in a black suit standing beside the girl. He looked quite handsome, but his voice was low and hoarse.

“Going back won’t help anything.” The girl’s voice was incredibly calm, her face completely emotionless.

“...” The man didn’t say another word. He simply supported her gently as they stepped into the elevator, brushing past Su Yun.

Just as she was about to leave, Su Yun couldn’t help but glance at the girl out of the corner of her eye.

But the girl was looking straight at her.

Uh…

Her pupils were pitch black, deep and piercing—like they could cut right through a person’s soul.

Su Yun quickly looked away and hurried out of the elevator.

On her way to school, she kept thinking about that brief moment.

The girl’s complexion wasn’t as pale as yesterday—there was some color back in her face. Her eyes were open now, and she looked far prettier and more delicate than she had lying unconscious yesterday.

As long as she was okay.

Su Yun didn’t bother guessing who the man with her was, nor did she have any intention of asking. After all, they didn’t even know each other.

There was no way the girl could know Su Yun had gone into her room yesterday, or that Su Yun had stripped her and helped her.

“Hmm… why are there so many cars at the school gate today?”

When Su Yun arrived at the gate, the area was filled with shiny cars reflecting the morning sun. They looked pretty cool, actually.

……

Su Yun didn’t need breakfast, so she got to the classroom by 7:30.

Classes didn’t start until 8:10, so she was the first to arrive.

With nothing better to do, she pulled out her books and started reviewing what she had learned the past few days.

Around 7:40, the sharp screech of a chair dragging against the floor caught her attention, and Su Yun looked up.

The second person to arrive in class was Chen Tingting.

Su Yun hadn’t planned to care—just a glance before going back to reading—but at that moment, she caught a glimpse of something.

Chen Tingting’s eyes were red.

Her eye rims were swollen, with visible bloodshot veins in her pupils.

Huh… did the class belle get dumped? Cry herself to sleep?

Su Yun casually speculated, then secretly felt a bit satisfied.

You keep stringing people along—serves you right. Karma got you.

She didn’t think more about it and kept reading. After another half hour, the classroom was full.

Liu Fei sat in the seat in front of her and started telling her in detail what had happened yesterday afternoon, his face full of anger.

While they talked, other students nearby gathered around to listen intently.

At this point, the entire school basically knew what happened. News spread fast on campus.

As for whether it would spread beyond the school? Probably not.

But the dorm supervisors would definitely be stricter about security from now on.

After hearing the full story, Su Yun’s mood grew even gloomier.

Once the two morning classes ended, she grabbed her phone and rushed off to the hospital to visit Zhang Deyi.

On the way, she bought some mangoes—she remembered back when they were dormmates, she’d often see Zhang Deyi eating them, so he probably liked them.

The hospital was nearby—the Third Hospital just a short bus ride away.

As Su Yun stood at the bus stop waiting, someone had actually been tailing her the whole time.

“?”

Qin Xue frowned, visibly displeased.

Well, well, Sister Xiaoyun, you lied to me again. Said you were going home to rest, huh?

“Xuan, keep an eye on her. Whatever bus she takes, follow her.”

“Yes, Miss.”

Qin Xue stepped into the car with her long legs, crossed elegantly on the seat. Her eyes stayed locked on the girl holding a bag of fruit in the distance—her Sister Xiaoyun.

Actually, from the very first day, Qin Xue had sensed something.

Su Yun was hiding something from her.

Today’s just lucky. She finally caught her.

……

(Qin Xue: Sister Xiaoyun, are you home now? Can you chat with me?)

(Me: A bit tired. Gonna take a nap.)

On the bus, Su Yun replied to the message on her phone.

She had no choice. If Qin Xue followed her, her “male” identity might not stay hidden.

(Qin Xue: Alright then, sweet dreams~)

Surprisingly, Qin Xue didn’t push it. She gave in quickly.

That took Su Yun off guard, but she also breathed a sigh of relief.

After getting off the bus, she started looking for the hospital room Liu Fei had mentioned. Along the way, she asked several nurses for directions.

But for some reason, Su Yun felt anxious, like something bad was about to happen.

And when she finally found Zhang Deyi’s room and set the fruit down to the side—

“Brother Yun, stop hiding. Why have you been lying to me?” Zhang Deyi’s voice changed to one of accusation right after thanking her.

It was like Su Yun had lied about something really serious.

“Huh? What have I been hiding?” Su Yun’s voice almost slipped into a higher pitch. She didn’t dare look him in the eye and turned her gaze toward the window.

Her heart was pounding like crazy.

How did Zhang Deyi find out she was the white-haired girl? When did that happen…?

As expected, getting hurt by others for someone like her—it must’ve felt awful. And infuriating.
