Chapter 49

Volume 2. Game Update in Progress

"Ahhhhhhhhh!!!"

In a pitch-black alley, tucked in a corner untouched by sunlight, a body over three meters tall was stretched out like a rubber band.

Its wide mouth grinned bizarrely from ear to ear as it constantly chewed on a freshly screaming soul.

However... passersby didn’t notice anything unusual here.

No matter how piercing the screams of that soul were, not a single person came to look.

There was a small child on the roadside, who seemed to hear something, curiously glanced this way.

However... this child, who wasn’t even three years old, burst into tears after just one glance.

That heart-wrenching cry and the way he couldn’t form words made one feel distressed.

But... in my Evil Spirit Form, I had no concept of good or evil, or rather... my emotions were almost nonexistent?

I could see the reflection of the Evil Spirit Form in that child’s eyes and knew he was scared out of his wits, yet I still didn’t feel any sympathy.

I raised my hand and swallowed the remaining half of Manager Liu’s soul into my stomach.

Then, I quickly skimmed through the memories of Manager Liu and his subordinates and identified over fifty criminal offenses.

Murder, forcing women into prostitution, using deception to get people addicted to drugs, then extorting money—kidnapping and robbery were so frequent they made me angry.

I controlled Manager Liu’s body to sit in the car, closed the door casually, and picked up the laptop in his bag.

This laptop contained plenty of criminal evidence.

I stored all of it onto a USB drive he carried, then wrote down all his crimes in a Notepad file.

In Evil Spirit Form, I didn’t need to use the keyboard.

I just had to place my palm on it, and through the electromagnetic waves I emitted, I could control the keyboard.

Text rapidly appeared on the screen.

Soon, a confession of over ten thousand characters was completed.

I threw it into the USB drive, then possessed the big guy sitting in the driver’s seat.

I rolled down the window and started the car.

Under my control, the van started up, and I activated the illegally installed police siren.

Pedal to the metal, the van roared off at full speed.

In no time, the streets descended into chaos.

This wasn’t intentional—controlling another person’s body was very difficult for me.

Maybe it was because I’d spent too long inside Liu Yunyan’s body, or maybe there was another reason.

Either way, at this stage, I could still control other people’s bodies—as long as there was no soul inside.

The speeding vehicle naturally attracted police attention.

Soon, at a traffic checkpoint ahead, a traffic cop waved to stop me.

I drove the car straight to him and paused briefly, then casually tossed the USB drive—containing the confession and incriminating photos of victims—into his hand.

The van’s windows were covered with tinting film, so the officer couldn’t see what was going on inside.

"What’s this?"

The traffic cop seemed puzzled by ‘my’ action.

Though an explanation would’ve helped, my voice was too mechanical—it would’ve exposed things.

So I said nothing.

I floored the accelerator again.

With the cop unable to stop me, I broke through the checkpoint.

At once, sirens wailed—I knew the police were chasing the van now.

Still, I didn’t plan to stop.

After all, a van full of vegetative patients was way too suspicious.

So, I sped wildly through the streets.

A journey that would normally take twenty minutes was shortened to less than five.

I knocked over a traffic light pole, sent a command post flying, and crushed seven or eight bicycles along the roadside.

Finally, with three police cars in pursuit, I slammed the accelerator and crashed through a barrier, flying off Guan Temple Bridge!

At the moment of impact, I exited the big guy’s body.

As a vegetative person, drowning in the river would take less than three minutes.

Even if someone miraculously rescued them, they would still end up diagnosed as a ‘vegetative state due to prolonged oxygen deprivation and brain cell death.’

This way, everything made sense.

I watched as the van slammed into the thin ice with a loud clang.

The front crumpled from the impact, then the vehicle sank into the river.

To let water in faster, I opened all the windows.

So, aside from a few bubbles, the van quickly disappeared.

This river was about ten meters deep—not too deep, but easily enough to drown several people.

Floating in midair, I watched the van vanish beneath the surface.

Listening to the police sirens and shouts all around, I was sure no officer would go in to rescue anyone for now.

The ice was thin over most of the river, no one could jump in.

Even if they went to retrieve the van, it would take at least half an hour.

Without professional gear, jumping into icy water was basically suicide.

The scene was already in chaos.

I, on the other hand, had completed my mission and quietly retreated.

I had been out for nearly twenty minutes.

But this time, after devouring five souls, my resistance to hunger was noticeably better.

It seemed that after consuming souls, the controllability of the Evil Spirit Form improved.

As I flew back, I sorted through the memories of the five people I’d eaten.

I deleted everything except what was necessary.

Looking through them, I realized there were quite a few useful memories.

Things like ‘lockpicking’ and other tips and tricks for petty theft.

They might not be useful now, but who knew—maybe one day they would be.

So I kept those and returned to the teahouse.

Nothing had happened in the teahouse.

I had been worried that while my body was asleep, a waiter bringing tea might cause some kind of accident.

But it didn’t happen.

The tea had already been placed on the table long ago, untouched.

It had been over twenty minutes, and the tea had gone cold.

Of course, this was expected.

Without any delay, I returned to my body.

As sensation slowly returned to my consciousness, I opened my eyes.

"Hoo..."

I sat up and let out a long breath.

Though the process hadn’t been tiring, I was still careful not to attract suspicion, so I had been extremely cautious.

After tidying up, I put on my clothes, slung my bag over my shoulder, walked to the tea table and glanced at it.

After a moment’s hesitation, I drank the cold tea.

Then I set down the cup and walked out the door.

Downstairs, I paid the bill and added an extra 300 yuan.

Whether the tea was worth that price—I had no clue.

But I was here to cover up my actions, so I didn’t bother saying anything.

I tossed down the money and walked out.

The small thug who had been tailing me all this time perked up the moment he saw me come down the stairs.

He immediately picked up his phone to make a call.

I glanced at him and thought, ‘Your boss is currently doing winter swimming in the city moat.’

Sure enough, after several failed calls, he started to panic.

Sweat beaded on his forehead.

He looked at me again, hesitated, but ultimately didn’t follow.

That was the right choice.

If he had followed, I would’ve been ready to take him out too.

Walking out the door, I looked at the street—it was peaceful as always.

In the distance, police sirens blared.

The corners of my mouth... couldn’t help but curl into a smile.

I stretched lazily and muttered like an old man.

"Comfortable~"

After devouring five souls, the Evil Spirit Form had a proper feast, and sure enough, it began to nourish the physical body in return.

Everything that had happened today had left me deeply shaken.

Even someone in good health might not be able to handle it—let alone a fifteen-year-old girl.

The physical energy I’d expended during the day began to recover rapidly.

Boiled fish was a dish that already took a long time to prepare.

Let alone with the amount I ordered, so it made sense that I hadn’t received a call from Shao He yet.

Thinking about it... the station front really wasn’t far from here.

It only took a ten-minute walk, just past the bridge.

"Then let’s walk~"

After some thought, I decided to walk to the Bashu Restaurant—after all, I had nothing else to do.

Across from the teahouse was the school.

Before leaving, I instinctively took a glance at the school that had terrified me all day...

Yet that one glance made my entire body shudder once again.

Faces.

Plastered across the windows, like pained moans or manic laughter—distorted faces stuck to the glass, now... staring at me.

This time... it wasn’t just one or two windows, but...

The entire main building of the academy!!

Thousands of twisted faces covered the windows.

Pairs of eerie green eyes stared right at me!

My heart gave a violent thud—cold as ice and sinking fast!

This sudden mission had come and gone without disaster, but...

Looking at all those faces, I suddenly felt a strong urge... to take a leave from school.

Damn it, who could survive getting scared like this every day?!

I frowned slightly, calmly raised my left hand, flipped them the middle finger—and then...

The faces stuck to the windows began to twist and contort.

Well, fine... looks like I pissed them off.

Hopefully next time—no, hopefully there won’t be a next time.

"Emmm... where should I transfer to?"

Thinking this, I began walking toward the direction of the station.

The rest of the way was uneventful.

I casually glanced at the crane lifting the vehicle and bodies from the bridge, then arrived at the Bashu Restaurant.

I had arrived, but the food wasn’t ready yet.

Maybe the kitchen was a bit busy, but I wasn’t in a rush.

I gave home a call, then picked a random table and sat down to eat with Shao He.

This girl Shao He came from a military academy.

I didn’t know why she chose not to become a soldier and instead entered the bodyguard profession.

But I didn’t ask too much.

I figured I’d wait for her to open up on her own.

Faced with the three massive bowls of boiled fish in front of me, I could no longer resist my craving.

Time to eat!
