Puppy caught in rain (v1c56)
Ye Sheng held the crossbow firmly and stared warily at the outside of the shack. Even though the attackers had retreated, she didn't know if they would use some sneaky tricks to strike back.
That's why she didn't chase after them when she shot and wounded several of them. She wasn't kidding herself. They were a gang of robbers, not just one or two people, and she was no god of death.
Did she expect to run after them and kill them all?
No, she was lucky enough to fend them off tonight.
She stayed alert for half an hour, but there was no other sound outside the shack. Ye Sheng breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed a bit, but she didn't put down the crossbow.
The robbers couldn't afford to linger.
If the mercenaries caught them, they would be dead for sure.
When she felt safe, Ye Sheng thought back to the battle. The feeling of killing someone for the first time made her chest tight.
Her arms were shaking uncontrollably.
She had grown up in a society governed by law, not a twisted murderer. In the past, no matter how hard she fought, she would only get a bruise on her nose or face, but now she could kill someone with one arrow.
She knew in her heart that it was either them or her, so she didn't need to feel guilty.
But killing someone was not like killing a chicken. It took time to calm down.
"Ye Sheng, are you okay?"
The little girl's voice was clear and smooth, unlike the stuttering speech she had during the day.
Hearing the concern in her words, Ye Sheng forced a smile that was uglier than crying. Her black eyes, which had shone brightly during the fight, dimmed, making her look like a pitiful puppy in the rain.
(′へ`、)
She took a few steps back and came to the girl's side, trying to act casual. "Of course I'm okay, Gu Luoyu. You don't know, those vicious gangsters were killed by me with one arrow as soon as they showed up, and the rest ran away in panic."
She conveniently left out the part where she missed her target and trembled with fear.
But she forgot to hide the quiver in her voice, and Gu Luoyu could tell that she was scared.
It was not just fear of the robbers, but also self-blame after killing someone.
Gu Luoyu didn't understand.
She had been fighting polluted creatures since she was eight years old, and she was very good at killing people. In her eyes, there was no difference between humans and polluted creatures. The only difference was that humans would struggle and curse when they died, which was more interesting than the roars of the polluted creatures.
She had thought Ye Sheng was somewhat interesting before.
But now she realized that she was just an ordinary person, very boring.
She quickly lost interest and put on a perfect mask, coaxing Ye Sheng with a smile. "Ye Sheng, you are so awesome. It's thanks to you that we were able to fight off the gangsters tonight."
"Am I awesome?"
"Yeah, awesome."
Gu Luoyu's disguise was flawless, not only her expression, but also her tone of voice was full of admiration.
If it weren't for the calmness in her heart, anyone would think that she admired Ye Sheng to the extreme.
But it was all a lie.
The naive Ye Sheng couldn't see through it, and was even moved to tears. The facade she had put up collapsed, making her cry and reach out to hold the girl's hand.
o(╥﹏╥)o
She said with a choked voice, "Actually, I'm not very good. I was so scared when I saw those gangsters."
"They all have weapons in their hands, and they are so tall that it would be hard for me to jump up and hit them..."
Ye Sheng was amused by her own words and burst into laughter.
As she vented her emotions, she felt the guilt of killing people fade away.
She poured out all her thoughts, "Today, Old Lin and Zhou Lin both tried to persuade me to move to someone else's house, and then come back after avoiding them for a while, but I refused."
Gu Luoyu listened to Ye Sheng's words quietly, moving her fingers slightly. She was not used to being touched by others.
The strange warmth made her want to pull away.
But Ye Sheng held her tightly, and Gu Luoyu could only answer her question softly, "Is it because of me that you don't move out?"
"Yes, Xiao... Gu Luoyu, you are too beautiful. I can't protect you, so I can only hide you... Don't worry, I said it from the beginning. If I have food, you won't go hungry!"
Ye Sheng promised loyally, and then said with some embarrassment, "When I was fighting the gangsters, I only had one thought in my mind... I didn't want to die, and I didn't want you to die either."
Her dull black eyes regained their luster.
She kept her sitting position, but leaned down, rubbing her cheek against the girl's hand, and muttered, "We both need to be well."
Gu Luoyu felt conflicted.
In her palms, she could clearly feel the softness of Ye Sheng's cheeks and the strange sensation of her long eyelashes brushing by.
It made her heart itch.
She asked her to repeat, "Live well!"
Gu Luoyu wanted to laugh. Others wanted her to die, but Ye Sheng wanted her to live.
So naive and stupid.
She suddenly wanted to get better quickly.
Besides killing those old bastards after recovering, she also wanted Ye Sheng to see with her own eyes that she had saved a villain.
What would Ye Sheng say then?
…
Ye Sheng tied the iron can with a rope and made a circle around the shack.
Then she straightened the fallen door panel, propped it up behind the door with wood, and reluctantly closed the door again. Then she used wood to patch up the wooden wall that had been chopped off by the sharp blade.
After everything was done, sleepiness came over her at night.
She had wanted to stay awake until dawn, but the girl offered to keep watch. If she heard the sound of the tin can, she would wake Ye Sheng up right away.
Ye Sheng, who was relaxed, couldn't resist.
She fell asleep right away, and when she opened her eyes again, it was already bright.
Then she let the girl catch up on her sleep, while she took a basin and a towel and went out to wash up... She had been so nervous when she dealt with the gangsters yesterday, and when she woke up, she found that she was dirty.
She had to wash quickly.
But as soon as Ye Sheng came out of the house, she felt the warm gazes from all directions, as if they were looking at some rare treasure, sweeping over her body.
Ye Sheng twitched the corner of her mouth silently, keeping her expression unchanged, and continued to carry the basin to get water.
But as she walked along, more and more eyes followed her, making Ye Sheng almost lose her patience.
'I was just fighting off the gangsters, why did they have to gossip like this?'
"Shengsheng!!!"
Just when Ye Sheng was thinking about running away after getting the water, Zhou Lin's excited voice came from the distance, and she ran over soon. Then she and Ye Sheng went to a place with few people and squatted down to brush their teeth.
"Shengsheng, you're amazing! How did you kill all those gangsters?"
Zhou Lin couldn't contain her curiosity as she brushed her teeth with Ye Sheng. Ye Sheng looked at her in confusion. "How do you all know?"
"Don't you know? There's blood all over the front of your house. Anyone can tell you had a fight!"
Zhou Lin gazed at her with admiration. Ye Sheng felt obliged to explain. "I didn't kill them all. Some of them ran away."
She thought about the consequences of leaving some of them alive, especially the one who had shouted for his son. The hatred of losing a son was not something that could be easily forgotten. They would surely come back for revenge.
That's why Ye Sheng had thought of a clever idea.
This time, there was no way the gangsters could come back!
