Chapter 28

Two Surprises (v1c28)

Ye Sheng was swayed by the lure of money. She ignored the stench of the rotting corpse and walked over to it. She didn't grab the bag right away, but endured her nausea and examined it closely.

The corpse was dressed like a mercenary.

But unlike ordinary people, mercenaries had strong physical fitness and sophisticated equipment. How could they be killed by a porcupine rat that was already wounded?

It didn't make sense.

Or maybe the porcupine rat was just scavenging the carcass?

That raised another question.

Why would a mercenary die so close to the safe zone wall?

Ye Sheng was curious, but the corpse couldn't tell her what had happened. She could only try to piece together the truth from the clues on the body.

The corpse wasn't too decomposed. It had passed the stage of rigor mortis and had become soft. A lot of bacteria had grown in the body after death, causing the internal organs to rot and produce gas. The corpse's abdomen was bloated.

If Ye Sheng had come a few days later, she might have seen maggots and flesh-eating insects...

But she could still see the condition of the corpse today.

For example, the corpse was lying on the ground, and the blood that had flowed from the back of its head had dried and changed color, soaking the soil.

Ye Sheng didn't want to turn the body over to see the wound on the back of its head.

She just wanted to analyze it, not investigate it thoroughly. She only needed a quick glance, not a detailed inspection.

As her eyes moved down from the corpse's head, Ye Sheng soon saw the injury on its chest. A large hole had been torn and its heart had been crushed. Even if the wound on the back of its head wasn't fatal, the heart wouldn't survive being ripped apart.

She didn't need to look any further. The scratches near the chest confirmed that the mercenary had been killed by the porcupine rat.

And it had been a surprise attack.

Based on Ye Sheng's unreliable guess, this unlucky person had come back from the wilderness alone. They had thought there was no danger so close to the safe zone. But they had let their guard down and had been ambushed by the porcupine rat, which had clawed the back of their head.

Then it had taken advantage of their weakness and had shredded their heart with its claws.

It had waited until they were completely dead, and then had dragged the body into its den to use as food...

Ye Sheng was thinking this when her eyes caught a glimpse of a bare sword hilt clenched in the corpse's hand. Judging by the grip, the mercenary might not have died so easily, but had fought back.

But they hadn't made it.

Ye Sheng had never seen a sword that was broken so cleanly. It was so strange that she wanted to pick it up and take a look, but the corpse held it too tightly and she couldn't pry it loose.

And when she reached out to touch the hilt of the sword, a mechanical voice sounded in her head.

[Do you want to recycle the damaged energy sword?]

(。-_-。)

What?

An unexpected twist!

This bare sword hilt was actually the legendary energy sword, similar to a laser sword.

She could buy it with a lot of points in the swap shop.

But besides having enough points, she also needed energy stones to activate the energy sword. Although it was powerful, it was a waste of money to use it for fighting.

Ye Sheng had thought that the mercenary had broken the weapon in a fierce struggle, leaving only a useless hilt...

She had been wrong.

But even though Ye Sheng was interested in the energy sword, it seemed to be damaged.

She didn't bother to try to pry the energy sword from the corpse's clenched hand. She simply agreed to recycle it in her mind.

To make the process easier, she placed her fingers on the hilt of the sword.

The next second, the sword hilt vanished from the corpse's hand, and a voice announced.

[You have recycled the damaged energy sword and earned 300 points]

!!!∑(゚Д゚ノ)ノ

That's a lot! ! !

Ye Sheng's eyes widened in shock. She hadn't expected such a pleasant surprise.

A zero-energy energy stone was worth only 10 points, but this broken energy sword was worth 300 points.

That was awesome!

She needed 1,000 points to draw a blind box, and she had already collected almost a third of it.

Ye Sheng smiled happily. She didn't know how many points she could get for an energy stone with enough energy, but her first priority was to use it to heal the poor boy.

She didn't have any spare energy stones for the lottery.

So, scavenging like this... ahem, getting random items and exchanging them for points was not a bad idea.

It was good for everyone.

Encouraged by her success, she turned her attention to the satchel on the corpse. She was even more curious about what was inside.

Unlike the energy sword that was tightly gripped by the corpse, the satchel could be cut open with a dagger. But it was close to the body, and it smelled awful.

Ye Sheng didn't dare to touch it. She emptied her backpack and moved closer with her torch.

The orange-red flame lit up the ground, and she saw two tubes of ordinary nutrient solution, as thick as her fingers, and a small syringe filled with black liquid.

The needle was covered by a black cap.

The surface of the syringe was engraved with a fierce and snarling wolf, which looked realistic. She didn't know what it was, but Ye Sheng was sure it was valuable.

She decided to test it.

She took out her testing machine from her bag and scanned the black syringe. The device beeped and displayed the result.

~Primary speed booster detected~

Ye Sheng's eyes sparkled when she saw it was a speed booster.

This was something she could buy in the swap shop, but it was very expensive.

She remembered what Old Lin had told her before, about the various potions and enhancers that were available.

These products could boost the human body's abilities and could be used for fighting or escaping. They were all very useful.

To use it, she just had to remove the cap and inject it into any part of her body.

The booster would take effect immediately and last for fifteen minutes.

After that, her body would be exhausted. It wouldn't affect her movement, but it would drain her energy. She would have to find a safe place to rest and recover as soon as possible.

She also had to be careful about the level of the booster. For people with low physical fitness, the primary booster was enough. If she skipped the primary and used the intermediate booster directly...

Her body would collapse before the booster worked.

In short, she had to be aware of her own physical condition.

Ye Sheng was amazed by the treasures she had found in the mouse hole. She didn't care if there were no edible plants left by the porcupine rat.

These items were more than enough!

She understood why robbers liked to loot and get rich quick.

She put the primary speed booster and the two nutrient solutions in her bag, and then paid her respects to the corpse. She hoped that the poor guy would have a better life in the next world. This one had been too cruel.

She moved on after taking the satchel.

It was time to finish exploring the rat hole.
