Chapter 44 - Your Husband is Truly...
While his wife was busy brewing medicinal herbs, Li Nan Ke found an excuse to shut himself in a side room and enter the Red Rain dream.
After killing the Grave Person, He Qing Yu, a white pearl had clearly entered his body. The others hadn't noticed it at the time, but he could sense it clearly.
He remembered that a white pearl had also appeared after he killed the Nightmare before.
Afterward, he had even received a reward: a brick specifically for screwing over teammates.
Evidently, these mysterious white pearls could not only be obtained by slaying Nightmares in the Red Rain dream, but could also be acquired in reality by killing Grave People or even Demonic Creatures.
However, they could only be used within the Red Rain dream.
When Li Nan Ke opened his eyes, he was once again back in that familiar, old nuptial chamber.
The red candle on the table had burned halfway down.
The crimson candlelight added an inexplicable, bone-chilling eeriness to the already gloomy little room.
The bound young woman was no longer on the bed.
This made Li Nan Ke somewhat wistful, and he mused about tying up another young woman next time he had the chance, to play out some R-rated, pay-per-view scenarios in the dream. After all, it was only in a dream that one could truly unleash the desires from the depths of their heart.
Outside the window, the sky was gloomy and dark.
The overlapping curtains of red rain rendered the entire world a vibrant, bloody crimson.
Li Nan Ke tried to open the door, but just as he'd expected, it was still stuck fast. No matter what method he used, it wouldn't budge an inch.
“Piece of junk.”
Li Nan Ke cursed under his breath and sullenly sat back down in the chair by the table.
He casually touched his chest, and the white pearl that had originally disappeared reappeared in his hand.
The next moment, however, the white pearl flew to the space opposite Li Nan Ke, just as it had before, and then instantly vanished, as if swallowed by a mysterious force.
Li Nan Ke focused his attention, observing closely.
Compared to the last time, he clearly felt a faint ripple in the air after the white pearl vanished.
It was as if there was another person in the room.
This person was staring at him.
“Is anyone there?” Li Nan Ke tried calling out.
As he expected, there was no response.
Li Nan Ke pursed his lips. He couldn't be bothered to waste energy pondering the room's strangeness, so he placed the flintlock pistol on the table and began to wait for his reward.
What would the reward be this time?
Anything but a brick.
A greatsword would be for the best.
Failing that, a silicone doll wouldn't be unacceptable either.
Awkwardly, however, after waiting for a long while, no reward appeared.
Aside from the red candle and the flintlock pistol on the table, there wasn't a damn thing else.
Li Nan Ke frowned deeply and knocked on the table.
“Big Bro? Big Sis? Settle the bill already, my wife is waiting for me to come to bed.”
The room was utterly silent, with only the red rain drifting outside.
The candlelight swayed like the red skirt of a dancing woman.
“What’s the situation? Have you decided to just freeload?”
Li Nan Ke slammed his fist on the table and cursed.
“Have you no shame? Is it glorious to steal the fruits of another's labor? Is the ugly face of a capitalist showing itself now? Can you stop keeping your conscience in your ass? Can’t there be a little more trust between people…”
The more Li Nan Ke cursed, the more worked up he became. He rolled up his sleeves, about to flip the table over.
Suddenly, the flintlock pistol on the table floated up by itself.
The muzzle aimed right at Li Nan Ke.
“Er, actually, that brick was pretty good to use.”
Li Nan Ke broke into a brilliant smile, his teeth looking exceptionally white.
Bang!
A gunshot rang out.
……
Li Nan Ke shot bolt upright, gasping for breath.
His forehead was covered in beads of sweat.
The dizziness from returning to reality from the Red Rain dream was a little stronger than last time, possibly because he hadn't been mentally prepared.
Li Nan Ke grabbed the cold tea nearby and took two large gulps. Once he had calmed down, he cursed while still breathing heavily,
“What the hell was that? Who gives a damn about your crappy reward.”
Although he was displeased, it also proved that there was indeed another mysterious entity inside the room.
It might be a person, or it might be a Nightmare.
Li Nan Ke looked out the window, his gaze losing focus for a moment in thought. He muttered, “I hope it’s a fuckable girl.”
...
Li Nan Ke welcomed a new day with his wife's usual kidney-nourishing breakfast.
Perhaps because he had drunk the tiger penis medicinal wine, the man felt his qi and blood were much more vigorous. He walked with a powerful stride and a devil-may-care swagger.
He was itching to rip off his shirt, head to an oil well, and start drilling for oil.
To show off his studly demeanor.
He had planned on finding Sister Goose to relieve his loneliness, but when he saw her sitting atop Grandpa Turtle's back—a rare sight—enjoying a morning sunbath, Li Nan Ke decided against disturbing the pair of cross-species lovers.
At noon, three little rabbits came hopping over.
“Big Brain!”
A pleasant voice, like that of a trickling spring, wafted over with the young woman’s sweet fragrance. Meng Xiao Tu’s eyes curved into crescents as she said with a grin:
“I have good news for you.”
“Did the Night Patrol appointment come through?” Li Nan Ke raised an eyebrow.
“Not that fast.”
Meng Xiao Tu waved a small, fair hand and hopped onto a high stool by the door, gently swinging her slender, shapely calves.
“The appointment needs to be assessed by the higher-ups, which usually takes a long time. A month at the minimum, or as long as three to five months.”
“Oh.”
Li Nan Ke responded.
“But your appointment will be quicker; it should come through in about five or six days,” the young woman said with a smile, blinking her eyes.
“After all, you went through Sister Leng’s back door.”
Li Nan Ke nodded and asked, “So, what’s the good news?”
“Take a guess. You’re Big Brain, after all.”
The young woman crossed her arms in front of her chest, putting on a mysterious air. With every frown and smile, it was as if a spiritual charm overflowed from her.
Li Nan Ke thought for a moment before saying seriously, “I can play basketball now?”
“Huh? What’s ‘playing basketball’?”
Meng Xiao Tu didn't understand. Seeing that he couldn't guess, she said with some disappointment.
“Never mind, I’ll tell you. We—”
“The Demonic Creature, Old Qin, has been eliminated.”
Li Nan Ke provided the answer.
Meng Xiao Tu paused, stunned, then clapped her small hands and laughed.
“I knew you could guess it! Based on the clue you provided, we really did find the Demonic Creature Old Qin in the deep forests of Wenyan Mountain, but—”
Hearing the word “but,” Li Nan Ke knew there was a new twist.
The young woman said, “But it was already on its last breath. It had a fatal wound, and from what we can tell, it was injured by another Demonic Creature.”
“The Demonic Creature from Yun City?”
Li Nan Ke finally understood what good news the young woman was talking about.
Leng Xinnan’s purpose in coming to Dongqi County was to capture the very Demonic Creature that had caused such a huge disturbance in Yun City, but she had unfortunately made no headway.
Now, they finally had a lead, which proved that the Demonic Creature was indeed hiding in this area.
All that was left was to narrow down the area and conduct a thorough search.
“So, you killed the Demonic Creature Old Qin?” Li Nan Ke asked.
“Not yet,” Meng Xiao Tu said, shaking her head.
“Demonic Creatures regain some of their rationality and become lucid right before they die. Sister Leng wanted to try and get clues about the Yun City Demonic Creature from it, so she had it captured and brought to the Night Patrol’s prison. Unfortunately, Old Qin refuses to say a word; he’s just waiting for death.”
“He won’t talk because he still has an unresolved obsession in his heart.”
Li Nan Ke tucked the flintlock pistol into his waist and said lightly:
“Let’s go. Allow this Li to send him on his final journey and farm some experience points.”
“Hey, wait for me.”
Seeing the man head toward the county town without another word, Meng Xiao Tu quickly leaped down from the high stool to follow him.
Just then, Luo Qian Qiu came out carrying a tray of sorted medicinal herbs, preparing to sun-dry them.
When Meng Xiao Tu saw her, she couldn’t help but give a thumbs-up and exclaim in praise:
“Doctor Luo, your husband is truly amazing! Let us borrow him for a bit.”
