Chapter 106: Never Let Go of a Windfall from the Sky
After a brilliant display of face-changing, Rigil Gai slowly walked to a few steps in front of Yi Ning as if carrying some rare treasure. He stood still to show he had no other intentions, then extended the hand holding the item toward Yi Ning.
That guy had backed down.
And he even intended to reduce Yi Ning’s disgust toward him by giving her a gift.
Lu Zheng manipulated the mouse to zoom in on the item in the guy’s hand.
“What’s this… thing?”
Unfortunately, Lu Zheng’s knowledge was somewhat shallow. Aside from recognizing that the item in the guy’s hand was a piece of metal, he couldn’t discern anything else.
But from how Yi Ning had the robot receive it and then operated it with such care, he could guess that the thing must be quite valuable.
Otherwise, Yi Ning wouldn’t treat it with such seriousness.
She was actually quite wealthy.
After accepting the apology gift, Yi Ning’s expression finally softened slightly.
However, as someone who knew Yi Ning quite well, Lu Zheng was very clear that the gift hadn’t changed Yi Ning’s intentions at all—only slightly shifted her attitude.
That look Yi Ning revealed still resembled one of someone staring at a well-fattened pig waiting to be slaughtered.
Lu Zheng finally and completely understood why Yi Ning refused to tell him any related information.
How could one let a fat pig that fell from the sky into their house escape so easily?
If it fell into my house, then it’s mine!
Yi Ning must be thinking this way.
“Heh~”
Lu Zheng curled his lips into a smile and shook his head at the screen helplessly.
But to Rigil Gai, this slightly softened attitude was the best opportunity for communication.
Seeing this, he quickly opened his mouth, trying to state his demands.
Unfortunately, Yi Ning simply glanced down at her phone and then raised a hand to signal him to stop.
A moment passed.
The two resumed communication again until Yi Ning waved a hand to signal the end of this conversation.
A melodious tune rang out once more.
Lu Zheng pressed the pause button, pulled out his phone, and glanced at the screen.
It was Miss Qiu Yu calling.
She must have already uncovered some information and was now calling to relay it to him.
“Hello…”
Lu Zheng answered the call.
“I’ve already had someone investigate the person you sent over. From the intel we’ve received so far, this guy looks highly suspicious.”
As expected.
Before Lu Zheng could even speak, Miss Qiu Yu started talking like a machine gun.
She held her phone between her ear and shoulder, picked up some files from the desk, and began flipping through them while explaining to Lu Zheng.
“We put the photo you sent into the facial recognition system here, but the system couldn’t identify him.”
“But I followed what you said in your text and looked into the shared bike he was riding. I contacted the shared bike company and asked them if anyone had ridden to Yi Ning’s base.”
“Guess what the result was?”
Excitement filled Miss Qiu Yu’s voice—it was nearly as if she had already told Lu Zheng the answer.
Still, Lu Zheng didn’t mind humoring her.
“You found something?”
“Of course we did!”
Miss Qiu Yu curved her lips into a grin.
“And because of the real-name registration, the shared bike company even provided that person’s identity information.”
“Is that so…”
Lu Zheng chuckled smugly and leaned back against the chair, lightly tapping the armrest with his free hand.
He had a feeling that digging a little deeper here would yield plenty of information—that’s why he’d packaged everything and sent it to Miss Qiu Yu.
“That’s right.”
Miss Qiu Yu nodded, flipped the document back to the first page, and began reporting the intel about the man in the surveillance footage to Lu Zheng.
“That guy’s name is Rigil Gai, 29 years old, with household registration in P-City. But I looked into him a bit and found that he mysteriously disappeared at the age of 10, with no records afterward.”
“So I contacted the Hero Association in P-City and asked them to help investigate. No response from them yet.”
“But based on my experience, kids who suddenly vanish like that are likely kidnapped by human traffickers and then sold to people from the Evil Council or the Freedom Alliance after being found to have superpower potential. I just don’t understand why his parents didn’t report it. They’re still living in P-City.”
Miss Qiu Yu put the file down and held her phone properly in her hand again.
“Knock knock.”
There were two knocks on the door to Miss Qiu Yu’s room.
“One moment.”
She briefly explained to Lu Zheng on the other end of the line, then slightly turned her head toward the door.
Ye Qin walked in holding some documents.
She glanced at Miss Qiu Yu, who was holding a phone, stopped a short distance away, and waved the documents in her hand. She used lip movements and hand gestures to signal “OK.”
The curve of Miss Qiu Yu’s mouth grew wider.
“Come here, I’m on the phone with Lu Zheng.”
Miss Qiu Yu switched the phone to the other hand, waved Ye Qin over, and took the documents from her with her free hand.
She clamped the phone between her shoulder and ear again and flipped briefly through the documents Ye Qin had brought.
Ye Qin stood off to the side, placing her hands near her lower abdomen, not daring to interrupt Miss Qiu Yu.
Instantly, the room was filled with the sound of “shh shh” as the pages turned.
Hearing the sound of her flipping pages, Lu Zheng also tactfully remained silent.
Soon, Miss Qiu Yu finished skimming through the document, slapped it onto the desk with a “bang,” then moved the phone slightly away and waved Ye Qin over again.
Ye Qin immediately bent down attentively and placed her ear near Miss Qiu Yu’s mouth.
“Tell them…”
Miss Qiu Yu also leaned forward slightly and whispered a few words into Ye Qin’s ear before sitting back in her seat.
Ye Qin nodded upon receiving the instruction, took a few steps back, then turned and left the room.
Miss Qiu Yu watched Ye Qin’s departing figure and chuckled smugly.
Looks like the file she had just read contained quite a bit of good news.
Thus—
Hearing Miss Qiu Yu’s delighted chuckle, Lu Zheng curiously asked a few questions.
“What happened?”
“Oh, nothing. Just that the people we sent for field investigation brought back good news.”
“Field investigation…”
Hearing that, Lu Zheng was momentarily stunned, then instantly caught on.
“You sent someone to investigate the place where that guy last parked? Did you find anything?”
“Hmph~”
Miss Qiu Yu kept a little suspense, then said in a boasting tone:
“Ye Qin came over just now to report this—We’ve found that guy’s current address!”
