I Have Returned, but I Cannot Lay down My Gun - Chapter 276

Chapter 276 – Screwdriver

───Bang! Bang! Bang!

“The position is not good…!”

Meanwhile, while Logan was sweeping up kills near the skill activation zone, Yoo Jin was unexpectedly having a hard time.

She had no firearms in her hands. She was literally empty-handed. The reason for this was quite simple – the starting point where she opened her eyes was a hotspot swarming with enemies, and naturally, she held an overwhelming advantage in the early skirmish.

However, firearms were limited, and when more people than the area could accommodate poured in, it was inevitable that resources would run out. In short, Yoo Jin and about four others fought vigorously at first, but soon lost all their bullets and either quickly fled or had their heads smashed by Yoo Jin.

If that were the end of it, it would have been fortunate, but the area was still teeming with enemies – which meant that any initial resources had already been swept up by others.

Guns without bullets.

Yoo Jin chose to run.

“How can she be so fast!?”

Of course, Yoo Jin’s escape skills could leave even the most seasoned players in awe.

But that was it. Without bullets, it was all in vain.

In the end, Yoo Jin felt the need to lighten herself until she could get proper weapons including bullets, and threw away the heavy metal lump called a gun at the approaching enemy.

“Argh!”

Crack!

A disturbing sound. It was a significant hit but unfortunately blocked by the shield. However, Yoo Jin had already retreated from her previous position, and concrete fragments splintered where she had been standing a moment ago.

The enemy was momentarily taken aback but quickly regained their momentum. They had already identified Yoo Jin and seemed determined to defeat her at any cost. In fact, that was true.

Kill her before she could pick up any remaining guns. That was the enemy’s premise.

Thus, both sides desperately increased and closed the distance repeatedly.

At the end of it was a small warehouse.

───Bang! Bang!

“Eek.”

As soon as Yoo Jin hid behind the cover, bullets flew in.

Yoo Jin quickly surveyed the surroundings. But the boxes that should have contained firearms were already opened, and only a few handguns were scattered around. However, even that could provide some suppression.

Rolling over to narrowly avoid the bullets, she grabbed a handgun tightly, almost crushing the grip, and fired rapidly. It was so fast it was hard to tell if it was a handgun or something else. By the time more than half of the Glock’s 17-round magazine was emptied, the enemy took significant damage and finally hid behind cover.

No matter what, if more than nine bullets hit the head and other vulnerable areas, it would cause considerable damage.

‘Two spare magazines…’

It was still ridiculously insufficient. Now that the enemy had been severely counterattacked, they wouldn’t rush in recklessly.

But once the shield was broken, it would come down to close combat. Yoo Jin’s concentration peaked at that point, and she immediately charged while calculating several preemptive routes.

Handguns and assault rifles fired at each other. The deafening noise echoed in the small warehouse. Their skills were not equal, but the firepower difference made up for the gap.

-Clack!

Running quickly while sliding into cover, Yoo Jin reloaded the magazine. The speed was such that even afterimages could be seen, and it didn’t affect her shooting at all.

Calculating the remaining bullets in her mind, the enemy approaching Yoo Jin was hit several times before barely managing to hide behind another cover, checking their shield with a dumbfounded expression.

Only 30% of the shield was left, from a mere handgun.

Realizing there was no time to calculate the remaining opportunity cost, the enemy started using grenades. The clinking sound of safety pins hitting the ground reached Yoo Jin’s ears.

‘Let’s see where they throw it from…!’

At that moment, the enemy moved closer. Bullets flew towards each other again. But the enemy moved ambiguously, depleting her bullets, making her unable to use her handgun anymore.

With one last magazine, Yoo Jin finished loading and fired again. At this point, the enemy’s remaining shield was estimated to be below 20%. To finish it off, she moved, and bullets crossed once more.

At the most intense moment of the skirmish, the enemy made their move.

They threw two grenades.

At that moment, Yoo Jin had only one bullet left.

───Bang!

Crack!

The last bullet hit one of the grenades, diverting its path significantly, but another grenade still flew straight at Yoo Jin, about 20cm away.

Without hesitation, Yoo Jin threw her handgun.

The two grenades exploded mid-air, scattering metal fragments everywhere like sunlight. The fragments shredded the shields on both sides, and a moment later, something shattered with an ominous sound.

It was the enemy’s shield, not Yoo Jin’s.

Unable to withstand the accumulated damage, the enemy’s shield finally broke.

The enemy moved at an unbelievable speed once their shield was broken.

Hearing the click of an empty gun, they judged all bullets were spent, and stood up from cover, immediately firing suppression shots to seize victory.

But at that moment,

───Smack!

“Ugh…!”

Their head reeled.

It wasn’t a bullet, but it dealt damage. In that moment, the enemy saw Yoo Jin – she had something in her hands.

A handful of small wrenches commonly found at the Aurora Power Plant. With a fierce expression, she threw them at an invisible speed.

Though the damage was minimal compared to bullets, it was still damage. And it threw off their aim.

But Yoo Jin didn’t stop there. She had plenty to throw and plenty to grab.

The next thing she grabbed was a sharp screwdriver.

-Thwack!

-[Alert: Critical left eye penetration. Status effect ‘Blindness’ inflicted // Duration: 3 minutes]

In an instant, their left eye went dark. The plummeting HP indicated the severity of the situation.

It was a fact often overlooked in the game due to constant gunfire, but the developers had mentioned how intricately the physics engine was implemented – and such items were often used in traps.

But to throw them directly!

“Oh god, what is this…”

But there was no god.

And even more so, there was no god for them.

Breathing heavily, the enemy stood up from cover, only to be struck by another screwdriver with immense force, worsening the situation.

As they collapsed to the ground, even their finger couldn’t leave the trigger. The second screwdriver, flying violently, skewered their hand horizontally, rendering their index finger useless.

Yoo Jin, like a killer returning to their trade for a single puppy, mercilessly threw screwdrivers, focusing on the vulnerable face area that couldn’t be protected by body armor.

After about five seconds,

“Haa…”

When more than five tools decorated the enemy’s face, they finally dropped their arm and were ejected to the lobby, leaving only their items behind.

Only then did Yoo Jin take a deep breath. Despite things not going well in the first match, such was life. The tension didn’t subside, but she carefully checked her surroundings. Vigilance was her habit.

After about 30 seconds of no sound, Yoo Jin dropped the hammer she had been holding.

“Glad I didn’t have to use this.”

At the same time, I checked the floor. It was the remains left by the enemy.

There were about three magazines left, and two grenades. It was clear that I wasn’t the only one having bad luck this round.

Sighing, I began to equip my gear.

“This should be enough.”

A wry smile crossed my face as I considered how the first skirmish of Friday had turned out.

I glanced at the kill log that appeared on one side of the UI.

-[Yoo Jin Killed Glorious with Screwdriver]

How meticulous.

Wondering if anyone had ever died from a screwdriver in the history of the Final Championship, or even in the game’s history, I quickly gathered my things and left the area.

Only the six screwdrivers scattered on the floor hinted at what had happened there.

And-

[General] Wow, seriously LOL

Please stop… I’m scared now…

How can someone kill a person with a screwdriver LOL

I can hear John Wick applauding from here LOL

Teacher, I’m truly afraid now, please stop LOL

Fun fact: This means it’s actually possible

We admit defeat! Please spare us! We’ll behave and donate more diligently!

This is how you get rid of troublemakers LOL

Getting a screwdriver in the eye is better than jail time hahaha

How many did she stick in the guy’s face LOL

His face was sprouting screwdrivers hahaha

Not kidding, it’s genuinely scary LOL

Dice and Harmony will be shocked when they see the replay LOL

???: What? I learned from someone like that?

People become humble when faced with brute force…

Who wouldn’t be humble after being turned into a pincushion LOL

Fun fact: She threw five wrenches at the head before this

She didn’t even use the hammer yet

Wait, a hammer? Teacher, please LOL

Does she see human heads as nails?

You might end up like that if you mess around LOL

Praying to God seconds before dying is hilarious LOL

Not looking for God in such an event would be legendary in itself hahaha

Honest opinion: The screwdrivers on the floor are the scariest part

We decided to call it a “dying message”

Don’t forget she dealt with two grenades before throwing screwdrivers, it was insane

Honestly, who didn’t watch today’s match LOL

“Amazing.”

Madison Square Garden, a massive stadium accommodating 60,000 people. Most of those enjoying the finals had their jaws dropped. Some couldn’t even close their mouths and had to rush to the nearby medical camp due to dislocated jaws.

Luckily, Harmony wasn’t that shocked, but her surprise was no less than the others. Seeing Yoo Jin throw screwdrivers like throwing stars or knives was nothing short of ghostly.

Moreover, the fact that it wasn’t a last-ditch effort shocked everyone. If Yoo Jin hadn’t retained some sense, she might have thrown the screwdriver at an enemy with an active shield, causing no damage.

But by not giving up till the end, she managed to break the enemy’s shield with just a handgun and a few grenades.

Back to the present.

“Um…”

Despite the ongoing match, at least ten thousand people kept replaying the scene, and Harmony barely managed to keep her focus.

As the shock of the screwdriver subsided, the remaining players were less than 50. The kill zone was shrinking rapidly, and Yoo Jin, who had finally secured a gun, was already on the move – but it didn’t mean the match was proceeding smoothly.

Players who had recovered from Thursday’s shock were now abandoning skills, but that wasn’t all. They had somewhat vaccinated themselves against Korean playstyles by analyzing their skills.

On the final day of the Final Championship, they had finally come up with some countermeasures against skills – though it was more of a formality than anything substantial.

Anyway, that wasn’t the important part.

“Holy…”

5,162,387.

In other words, the number of people watching the final day of the Final Championship through Harmony’s broadcast.

And naturally, almost all of them were talking about the bizarre and terrifying play Yoo Jin had just shown.

Got the clip LOL

This is why I don’t play Dark Zone LOL

OMG LOL

If I had to prepare for this, I wouldn’t play even if I had the skill LOL

Are you really human?

Maybe not.

What was certain was that this Final Championship would be talked about more than any other, for a long time. Everyone felt that way.

But regardless, the match continued, and people started to check the setups of some of the top contenders.

Yoo Jin’s setup was standard yet peculiar – specifically, it included an EMP pulse. For someone who excelled at using skills in the Final Championship, choosing a skill-nullifying skill was naturally a topic of discussion.

Meanwhile, Logan couldn’t be left out of this discussion-

“Wow, a bulletproof shield. Even the Juggernauts at high-value research facilities couldn’t break that.”

A polar bear with a bulletproof shield and a gun? LOL

You can hear Michael crying from here hahaha

It looks like it could stop a charging armored vehicle LOL

Logan’s bulletproof chest is amazing!!!

Bulletproof chest LOL

Ignoring the rowdy viewers, Harmony fell into thought.

Would Yoo Jin’s EMP pulse give her an advantage, or would the bulletproof shield? What was certain was that the former could disrupt the shield’s recovery. So if Yoo Jin broke the shield first, she had a higher chance of winning, and if not, Logan had a higher chance.

Anyway, hearing the constant calls to nerf the bulletproof shield, Logan using it was a bit…

“…Looks like she’s really going for it.”

Maybe Dice didn’t just run away from a sleeping polar bear but yanked out a nose hair and ran.

It didn’t seem like a good idea.

‘I’ll pray for Dice’s soul in advance.’

Waking a polar bear from its slumber carried heavy consequences.
