Chapter 35 – Magic Power Test (Part 1)
“Oh my god, a blank paper...”
“That little girl’s really got guts… and that’s Vanessa she’s dealing with...”
“Legendary!”
The surrounding freshmen began murmuring.
“Quiet!”
With a low bark from Vanessa, the area fell silent once again. Everyone tactfully shut their mouths—it was obvious Vanessa was angry.
Frowning, she began questioning Erika.
“Tell me. Why did you turn in a blank paper?”
“Didn’t... know the answers.”
Frightened by Vanessa’s sharp gaze, Erika looked pitiful and dodged eye contact, her voice barely audible.
“Not a single question?”
“Mm...”
“???”
Vanessa took a deep breath, trying to calm her temper. “Little girl, let me make this clear—this is Wode Academy, not a playground. If you don’t like it here, you’re free to leave. No one’s forcing you to stay.
I honestly don’t understand how someone Gladys recommended would turn in a blank test.”
Erika glanced up at her cautiously and whispered a small question.
“Then... does that mean I failed? Should I go home now?”
“Not yet.”
Vanessa glared and said coldly, “You still have to finish the full exam. Next is the second test. Go wait at the square outside.”
“Oh.”
Resigned to the outcome, Erika shrugged and slowly walked toward the square.
Isana walked out with her, shooting Erika a mocking glance full of ridicule.
What the heck is wrong with her...?
Won’t let me copy her test and now she’s mocking me?
...
At the square, a wide open space lay before them. At the center stood a raised platform, nearly twenty meters long. Suspended above it was a floating crystal orb, seemingly defying gravity—it looked quite magical.
The freshmen who had just exited the exam room all turned their eyes to Erika, still buzzing about her blank test paper.
Erika didn’t care. Say whatever you want—she knew she was going to fail and get expelled anyway. At worst, she’d get scolded by Gladys at home. Nothing to stress over.
As for training to fuse the Dragon Core Crystal...
If this academy didn’t want her, she might as well train at home with Gladys. After all, Gladys was strong—she probably knew even better how to handle the Dragon Core Crystal.
At the sound of a whistle, the students began to assemble in the square, ordered by student number. Because Erika was small, she ended up near the very back—practically invisible in the crowd.
Soon, Vanessa appeared with a notebook in hand.
“Now begins the second test. Line up by number. I’ll demonstrate first.”
She stepped toward the crystal orb on the platform.
“This is a special apparatus used at Wode Academy for freshman exams.
It measures the degree of magic power inside your body—like so.”
With that, Vanessa raised her arm.
Everyone thought she was about to smash the crystal orb with her fist.
Instead, she simply placed her palm gently against it.
The next second, the orb responded as if touched by some mysterious force and began to glow.
Immediately after, a glowing number appeared on the orb—100.
“This orb measures the magic power within a person.
As you know, physical strength is one aspect, but magic is another. The two complement each other.
Physical strength can be trained over time. Magic power, however, is a key indicator of one’s innate talent.”
Vanessa continued explaining.
“When it’s your turn, release your magic power as much as possible. What I did just now was only a demonstration.
To pass, your magic power must be at least 15. This is a straightforward test. Everyone knows how to use magic, right?
Let’s begin.”
In this world, as long as one had sufficient magic power, they could cast dazzling and wondrous spells.
Like the Invisibility Spell, Illusion Spell, and other small-scale magic.
If one’s magic power reached 15 or higher, they could begin learning to elementalize their magic and unleash powerful destructive spells.
Of course, magic stemmed from mental strength—it all depended on one’s talent.
Vanessa’s method, in essence, aimed to gauge the upper limit of the students’ magic potential.
The first student to step forward was a boy. Mimicking Vanessa’s pose, he raised his arm and released all the magic power in his body.
Shua!
With a sound, the crystal orb lit up, the numbers flashing quickly before settling on 10.
“Borg Field. Test result: 10 magic power.”
Vanessa glanced at the orb and recorded the number in her notebook.
“Tch. That’s it?”
“All show and no go. Watch me.”
...
The next student stepped forward.
“Ward Martilda. Test result: 16!”
“Peggy Herty. Test result: 14!”
“Frieda Abbott. Test result: 11!”
...
The testing pace sped up. Most freshmen scored around 15, none standing out.
Vanessa couldn’t help but shake her head repeatedly.
Still, every student gave it their all, releasing all the magic power in their bodies to earn a passing score.
In general, the boys tended to score higher than the girls—so far, no girl had surpassed 15. It seemed that men were naturally stronger in magic power.
The highest score thus far was 17, by a particularly smug boy acting like a top student.
Soon it was almost Erika’s turn, but she wasn’t taking it seriously. After bombing the written exam, this part just felt like a formality to her.
Next up was Isana. She took dainty steps forward, drawing everyone’s attention—they were all curious to see how the daughter of the Duke of Daylight would perform.
Though boys had a physical advantage, magic didn’t solely depend on that. Even someone with petite limbs like Isana could still post an impressive score.
“Go, Princess of Elfreid! Show these cocky boys what’s what!”
“Yeah! They think girls are weaker? Isana, show them the power of House Elfreid!”
The girls cheered for her.
As the daughter of the Duke of Daylight, Isana came from a family of born warriors—her magic power was naturally stronger than most.
They hoped she’d set a new record.
Isana didn’t respond. She simply walked silently to the orb. Under everyone’s gaze, she took a deep breath, raised her small hand, and channeled a surge of power from her body into her palm.
Shua!
The orb lit up dramatically. The number jumped at lightning speed—far faster than any previous student.
Finally, the number stopped. Vanessa announced:
“Isana Elfreid. Test result: 35!”
“Whoa!”
Cheers erupted across the square. Female students burst into joyful cries.
Isana had lived up to expectations and set a new record—one that stood out even among past classes of new students.
And to think, Isana wasn’t even that old. She just looked like a slightly more mature little girl.
