Chapter 8

Su Yun didn’t have much time to ponder the disparities of the human world. She picked up her pace—if she didn’t hurry, the dorm’s curfew would kick in.

It was already past eleven, and most parts of the campus were pitch-black. Now and then, she saw drunken boys and girls staggering around, holding each other up.

After about five minutes, Su Yun arrived at the dorm entrance.

She adjusted her hat to make sure not a strand of hair was showing before opening the door.

Click...

At that moment, all the gazes in the room turned to the just-returned Su Yun.

“Oh hey, isn’t this Su Yun? Coming back after eleven?”

“And you say you’re not dating?” The dorm immediately blew up once they saw it was Su Yun.

They all thought Su Yun had gone out to get laid. There was a small hotel right at the school gate—three hours for 80 yuan.

What kind of thing could keep someone out past eleven? One guess and it was obvious.

Compared to the others, Liu Fei—who was the first to suspect Su Yun was dating earlier that afternoon wasn’t too stirred. He just sat there, glancing sideways.

Liu Fei was eyeing Su Yun’s hat.

Something felt weird about it. It wasn’t flat like a typical beret—it had this puffed-up shape, like something was hidden underneath.

“No, I went out to work. I’ve been short on cash lately.” Su Yun tried to sound calm, but her raspy voice made her sound weird.

If a kid heard her right now, they might think a monster had come. Only her roommates knew Su Yun’s throat was “hoarse.”

“Short on cash? Spent too much on games?”

“What kind of job? Where’d you find it? I wanna look too.”

“Saving up... it’s off-campus. But they’re fully staffed now.”

“Ugh, alright.” The roommate who had also been looking for part-time work looked disappointed, then dropped the topic and went back to playing his shooting game.

The rest of the roommates, seeing there wasn’t anything juicy to talk about, also returned to whatever they were doing.

Su Yun went back to her spot. There was still something she had to do tonight:

Take a shower.

It had been two days since her last one, and she’d just cleaned that giant hall. She felt dusty, grimy even.

But there was a major problem—

What about her hair?

After washing, it would need to be blow-dried. No way she could do that in the dorm.

She stood hesitating in front of the wardrobe for a long time, before finally grabbing an unopened pack of tissues. Then she picked out some clothes to change into after the shower.

“Su Yun, you’re going to shower?” Just as she was all set to go, Liu Fei suddenly stopped her.

It startled her, but she calmed down quickly.

“Yeah. It’s been two days.”

“Oh. Well, hurry up. I wanna shower too.”

Liu Fei had been planning to shower as well, but Su Yun beat him to it. He had no choice.

Su Yun carried her things into the bathroom. It wasn’t big, but it was private. No one could see what she was doing.

She took out the contact lenses, tissues, hat, and a few other things she’d hidden inside her coat.

Removed the contacts. Took off her clothes. Washed her waist-length hair... and wrestled with a whole lot of mental resistance.

It was no simple task.

After looking carefully, Su Yun realized: since turning into a white-haired vampire, aside from her pupils, she was white from top to bottom. Not a trace of black anywhere.

...

“Su Yun, why’re you taking so long? It’s been half an hour! You better not be doing stuff in there. Hurry up, I still need to shower before the hot water runs out.” Just as Su Yun was drying her hair with tissues, a voice came from outside the bathroom.

“Almost done. Just a few minutes.”

“Alright, be quick.”

Liu Fei’s last comment was meant as a joke, but as he walked away, he definitely heard the sound of tissue rustling.

He got annoyed.

The hot water was about to run out, and Su Yun, this jerk, was in there... doing that?

But since they were roommates, he could only sit back down and angrily scroll his phone.

“Hey guys, check this out—Chen Tingting from our class just hit number one on the freshman ‘goddess’ ranking.” One of the roommates stood up in shock and showed his phone screen.

“Huh? She’s number one?” Liu Fei was skeptical. But when he saw the screen, he was genuinely surprised.

Their major was Information Engineering—basically a bunch of people typing on keyboards all day. Not exactly a hotbed of beautiful girls.

Chen Tingting was the class beauty pretty much by default. She was cute, but far from stunning.

Art majors had way more long-legged, small-waisted beauties. Liu Fei had peeked in the art rooms before. He didn’t think Chen Tingting deserved to be ranked number one at all.

“Seems like her votes shot up outta nowhere.”

“Did any of you vote?”

“Cut it out. Not all the girls are on that list anyway. Getting first place isn’t even that hard.” One of the top students, who’d been doing homework, chimed in calmly.

“True.”

The academic guy was right. They dropped the topic soon after.

But up on the top bunk, Zhang Deyi, who was secretly listening to English audio behind his bed curtain, was a little annoyed.

He knew Chen Tingting must’ve begged someone to boost her rank again.

Just hearing her name pissed him off, but after a while, his resentment faded.

He picked up his phone, opened a saved photo, took one look, and went back to his English listening.

“One banana... banana. Two bananas... bananana...”

...

“All done. Still had hot water.” After about forty minutes, Su Yun came out of the bathroom wearing her hat.

“You took forever, like some chick.” That wasn’t Liu Fei, just someone else throwing a comment out casually.

Liu Fei was too mad to speak. He’d been waiting too long.

“...” He grabbed the clothes he’d set aside earlier, stood up, and glared at Su Yun’s back as she walked past.

He stared for a while and frowned.

Why would you wear a hat right after showering? Isn’t your hair wet?

Liu Fei didn’t think too hard about it, assuming she hadn’t washed her hair, and rushed into the bathroom.

What followed was a quiet night. Nothing special happened in the dorm.

If anything, there was news that next Tuesday to Thursday the school would hold a sports meet. The class group chat was open for sign-ups—it came with credit.

But Su Yun had no athletic strengths. She planned to sleep through it all.

Lying in bed that night, she received her usual caring messages from her parents.

New tonight were a few texts from Qin Xue.

(Qin Xue: If you feel dizzy, let me know. Don’t go around biting people.)

(Also, don’t forget the task I gave you.)

(Me: I remember, I remember, Sister Xue~)

Su Yun replied a little helplessly, even adding the three words “Sister Xue” at the end on purpose.

Biting people... You’re the one biting people.

She felt like Qin Xue was treating her like a dog. Slightly offended.

But there was nothing she could do—Qin Xue had her completely in the palm of her hand.

Then again, it wasn’t too bad. Just doing some chores.

Now that she thought about it, that scene earlier with Qin Xue and Qin Yuanyuan hugging was really beautiful. Both girls were stunners—one the mature older sister type, one the loli type. Probably super popular on campus.

And yet she, Su Yun, had bitten such a cute little girl... and made her cry. Twice.

I’m sorry.

Su Yun’s mind buzzed with thoughts before she finally drifted off to sleep.

...

But there was one thing she overlooked—

Qin Xue was rich. If she needed housework done, she could’ve just hired a maid.

So why go through all the trouble of making Su Yun do it?

Even gave her a key?
